2013 Connecticut Student Writers Magazine Contest

A popular avenue for student writing sponsored by the Connecticut Writing Project (CWP) is the Connecticut Student Writers, a kindergarten through high school magazine established in 1987 by the CWP to honor excellence in student writing. The highlight of the publication process is a Recognition Night Publication Celebration hosted by the CWP on the UConn campus.  The magazine provides an arena for Connecticut students to present original works. It provides validation of authorship from Kindergarten through High School. It provides an opportunity for students to present their work before a live audience. Through its pages Connecticut students communicate and are able to recognize the importance of writing in their lives. For many it represents the first (and perhaps only) opportunity to be celebrated. For some it is a stepping stone to further literary endeavors.  Annually, over 1,000 students from across Connecticut submit entries sharing their passion for the craft of writing. From this large pool of applicants, examples of poetry, personal narratives, essays, short stories and drama are chosen to be published at each grade level. Additional pieces are selected for Honorable Mentions.

Submission Guidelines

1.             Categories: poetry, personal narrative, essay, drama, short story
2.             Students may not submit more than one entry per category.
3.             Entries must be postmarked or e-mailed by January 25, 2013.
4.             Each piece must be accompanied by the signed submission form.
5.             Please remember that the Submission Form with your signature, along with those of the student and parent, confirms the originality of the piece. PIECES WITHOUT ALL APPROPRIATE SIGNATURES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
6.             Submissions should not exceed 1,500 words.
7.             Teachers are encouraged to assist students in the selection of their submissions.
8.             Class sets will not be considered. Each entry must be submitted separately as described above.
9.             Middle and high school entries should be TYPED using a 12-point, Times New Roman, black font. We appreciate typed entries from ALL students, when possible.
10.          Please do not include clip art on the submission. Hand-drawn illustrations, however, may be included.
11.          We prefer the submission form to be typed (an electronic version is available at http://cwp.uconn.edu/csw.htm), but we will accept legible, hand-written forms.
12.          Electronic submissions of student writing are encouraged. For electronic submissions, please attach and send files to cwp@uconn.edu. Mail an original copy of the Submission Form with teacher, parent and student signatures to the CWP office at UConn.

Published writers and Honorable Mentions will attend a Recognition Night celebrating the magazine publication at the University of Connecticut’s Jorgensen Auditorium on May 14, 2013.  Published students will receive two complimentary copies of the magazine. Honorable Mentions will receive one complimentary copy of the magazine.
